First, non-canon dragon colors. In general, they aren't so bad. Some colors are reasonable and fine. Others... no. When I start seeing pinks and purples and glowing neon orange dragons and rainbows and glitters, then I start wtf'ing. I don't care if anyone thinks blacks or reds or silvers are overused. They at least make sense. A dragon that looks like it was dipped in toxic waste brimming with nuclear radiation is not realistic, and is in fact, laughable.
The thing that pisses me off more than anything else is screwing around with gender/Impressing specifics. The golds Impress to heterosexual girls. Bronzes Impress to heterosexual men. As far as I know, that was specifically made for a reason. I can see why, especially with golds Impressing solely to women. Pernese were bound to "regress," and thus, you get sexism, and women being unable to gain positions of power. This ensures that there is a position of power a woman can achieve.
What is the big frickin' deal with having to Impress guys to golds and bronzes to girls? So-and-so may say, "Well, I think it'd be badass to have my guy Impress to a gold or my girl to Impress a bronze." Apparently, it's just wish fulfillment, as far as I know.
It's not like bronzes and browns aren't that common anyway. Browns make up about fifteen percent of Pern's dragon population. Bronzes make up FIVE. Compare that to around fifty percent of greens or thirty percent of blues. Sure, there's a five bronze to one gold ratio, but does that mean bronzes're common? Hell no.
Then there's messing with dragon genders themselves. What is the point? Having girly bronzes or manly golds or tomboyish blues? Then, you've got a larger population of possibly Clutching dragons, though I figured that'd be female bronzes. So, you end up with a ratio of five Clutching dragons to one bigass male? I didn't think that was supposed to end up as a harem or something with one dragon impregnating a specific group of females that he "owns." Because he's bigger than his mates and thus has more power over them. And yes, a dragon's size does influence power over others. I don't care how strong willed your green or blue may be, they're not going to disobey an order from a gold. And a bronze won't either. So a female bronze will have no power over the male gold. If he orders them to have sex with him when they start wanting babies, I bet they'll obey that order or he'll force a Catch based on willpower alone.
Lessee, what else? Adding numerous species never heard of on Pern? Aliens? A shitload of other draconic species? Impressing cats? By the way, cats are not kept as pets on Pern. They freakin' kill people. Impression wouldn't even be possible for these things. Going that far, the place is hardly Pern. It's a world that is so unlike McCaffrey's original idea that it hardly even looks like Pern.
Next, themed Clutches. It doesn't bother me that much anymore, though it's still not something I like to see that much. Dragon eggs are not colorful, they do not have numerous complex markings. OK, markings on normal colored eggs aren't too bad. I'm not a huge ass canon Nazi that demands that every little detail stick to the things McCaffrey wrote. But seriously, eggs aren't covered in pretty, bright colors and rainbows. They don't have auras and they don't give out weirdass emotions to anyone who touches the shells. The dragons haven't even been born yet. How the hell would they start exhibiting complex emotions that I keep seeing when they haven't even had the experiences that could draw out such things?
In terms of RP, working on a themed Clutch is pretty impractical anyway. I'd rather spend more time on the hatchlings that I'd be giving out to players who have waited so long for a dragon. The themed Clutches are for a short period of time. The dragon should last longer than that. Unless some douchebag decides to head out because they didn't get a shiny gold.
Dragons saying "Mine" constantly are also irritating. It's more reasonable to see weyrlings say it occasionally. They're possessive of their new riders and they're young. But dragons are sentient beings. They know their riders' names. They say their names. Why the HELL would they forget the names of the people their very lives are bound to?
People on Pern do not constantly have twins and triplets and quadruplets. Thank god there aren't any Octo-moms there. But seriously. Pern is not advanced. They do not have the technology or the medicine or the means to successfully deliver healthy twins. Conception of twins is rare in real life. I'd imagine the likelihood of survival for Pernese twins wouldn't be very high. The life of the mother is also at a greater risk when she has more than one baby at a time.
This has been a completely random rant, out of the blue and with little to no actual thought put into it. I just wrote what came off the top of my head.
